How Can I Tell if My Chimney Is Unsafe to Use?
Unfortunately, chimney damages aren’t always easy to detect without professional equipment and an expert’s eye. A chimney may lookfine on the outside, but since it’s pretty hard to get a good view of the flue without camera equipment, it can be hard to know exactly where you stand. That said, a damaged chimney can lead to chimney fires, carbon monoxide exposure, structural damage, or even house fires, so it’s not something to ignore or take lightly.
That’s why booking annual inspections is so important – and it’s the best way to know whether your system is safe for use or in need of some repairs or replacement parts.Even rarely used chimneys can develop problems from moisture, bad weather, nesting animals, and neglect, so don’t skimp on care, even if you rarely (or never) use your fireplace.
What are warning signs you shouldn’t ignore between sweepings and inspections?
- Visible cracks or damage in the chimney structure. If you notice cracked bricks, crumbling mortar, or sections of the chimney leaning, that’s a clear sign the structure may be compromised.
- Missing or damaged chimney cap. A missing or damaged chimney cap can allow water, animals, and debris into the flue. These are one of the most important components for damage prevention, so be sure you have a durable one properly installed.
- Excess creosote buildup. If you notice thick, black, tar-like deposits inside your chimney, that’s creosote – a highly flammable byproduct of burning wood – and the biggest cause of chimney fires. It may be easily visible or you may notice strong smoky odors and poor draft while burning fires – both indicators of buildup.
- Efflorescence or staining. White staining (efflorescence) on the outside of your chimney indicates moisture problems. In addition, keep an eye out for rust stains in the firebox, and on the damper or chimney cap, as well as green vegetation growth on the exterior – all signs of bigger issues.
- Smoke or fumes inside the home. Smoke backing into your living space or a lingering smoky smell may signal poor draft, a blocked flue, or liner damage. If you ever smell gas or notice symptoms like headaches, dizziness, or nausea while using your fireplace, stop use and call for help – it could indicate carbon monoxide or something else toxic is leaking into the home.
- Pieces of tile or the liner in the firebox. If you find broken pieces of tile or ceramic in your firebox, your flue liner is likely cracking or deteriorating. A damaged flue liner can invite serious risks – like house fires, smoke in the home, creosote buildup, and more – so it’s not something to ignore.
- Presence of animals or debris. Nests, leaves, or even dead animals in the chimney can obstruct airflow, create a fire hazard, or cause harmful fumes to back into the home. Don’t ignore blockages – whatever the cause of them may be.
If you see any of these warning signs, stop using your fireplace until a professional chimney sweep or technician inspects it and clears it for operation. Need help soon? Don’t wait to reach out – we’ve got you covered.
What Causes Chimney Mortar to Deteriorate?
Chimney mortar is the material that binds bricks or stones together – and it can be one of the most vulnerable parts of a masonry chimney, if not adequately protected. Mortar is more porous – and less durable – than your brickwork, making it more susceptible to water damages and crumbling.
In fact, water infiltration is the biggest reason your mortar (or masonry, in general) will break down. Masonry materials are naturally porous, so if they’re not protected with waterproofing, rain, snow, and other types of moisture can penetrate the materials. Once absorbed, it’ll cause decay and deterioration, as well as expand and invite cracking during events like the freeze/thaw cycle.
You can protect your masonry from water damage by having your chimney sweep apply an industry-grade sealant (waterproofing), investing in appropriate leak prevention (flashing, chimney caps, chimney crowns, chase covers, etc.), and by booking annual inspections to ensure any issues are caught early.
All that said, remember that water isn’t the only thing that might cause issues. There’s also age and classic wear and tear. Like any construction material, mortar degrades with time, with most chimneys start showing signs of wear within 20-30 years – regardless of how well it’s maintained.
If your mortar is falling out, don’t wait to get in touch. We provide professional masonry repair services, and we’ll ensure you’re set up with everything necessary to help your chimney last for decades.
