Is It Safe to Burn Firewood That’s Been Stored Outside All Year?

It should be – as long as you’ve stored it properly, and it was correctly seasoned. Seasoned firewood means it has had enough time (typically 6 – 12 months) to dry out in optimal conditions. Burning wet or improperly stored wood can be inefficient, as well as lead to serious hazards, like creosote buildup, excess smoke, and internal chimney damage.

How can you properly store firewood to ensure it seasons correctly?

• Stack it correctly. Firewood needs air circulation to dry out effectively, so if it’s been stacked directly on the ground or in a pile with no airflow, chances are good that the bottom layers are rotting, moldy, or still wet. Keep it off the ground, and ensure there are gaps where air can flow through.
• Cover it properly. You want your firewood stack to be covered, so rain and snow doesn’t affect the seasoning process…but it’s not as simple as tarping the entire stack, as this can trap moisture. Rather, use the tarp to protect the top half of the stack, and keep the sides open to allow air to flow through.
• Use the right wood. You can do everything right, but if the wood isn’t the right type, it could still burn inefficiently. Avoid softwoods, as they encourage more smoke and buildup. Rather, stick to hardwoods, like oak, hickory, or maple.
• Split the ends. Whole logs take much longer to season than split wood. Splitting your firewood increases the surface area exposed to air, which helps it dry out faster and more evenly.
• Store it for the right amount of time. Most hardwoods need at least 6 to 12 months to properly season – and some, like oak, may require up to two years. Don’t rush the process.
• Choose a sunny, breezy location. Place your stack in a spot that gets plenty of sun and natural airflow. Sunlight helps evaporate moisture, and breezes carry that moisture away. Avoid shady, damp areas where the wood could reabsorb moisture or attract pests.
• Stack it in rows, not piles. Avoid stacking your firewood in a compact mound. Neat rows, with space between, improve airflow and make it easier to rotate older wood to the front. This method also makes it easier to spot mold, pests, or signs of rot.
• Rotate your wood. First in, first out – use the oldest, driest wood first, and keep newer wood in the back or on a separate stack. Regularly checking and rotating your wood stack ensures you’re always using seasoned wood.
