What’s the Best Time of Year to Schedule a Chimney Cleaning & Inspection?

Is there a “right” time of year to book a chimney sweep and inspection service? While we can do chimney inspections in nearly any weather, there are definitely certain seasons that are more optimal than others – and it might not be the ones you’re thinking of.

Most assume that the time to schedule your chimney maintenance is during fall – right around the time you’ll start using it again. We get the logic – why not make sure everything is good to go right before you light those first fires of the year?

The truth is, though, that you’re typically better off scheduling your annual chimney inspection in the spring or summer months. Why?

  • You’ll beat the fall rush. Most homeowners use their fireplaces heavily in fall and winter, meaning most get the idea to book an inspection at around the same time…which means our books get really busy in the fall. Booking early makes scheduling easier and ensures you don’t have delays.
  • You won’t have to wait for repairs. Even if you get an inspection done early in the fall, your sweep could spot damage that needs addressing before use. Discovering a blockage, damage, or safety hazard during peak season usually means waiting awhile before getting your next appointment booked.
  • Some repairs are better done in warmer weather. Any repair that requires curing is best done in warmer weather for the best results. These can be done in winter, but you might not get those long-lasting results you’re hoping for – and we’ll likely need to readdress the damage in the warmer months.
  • You’ll have time to plan and budget. If your chimney needs repairs or upgrades, finding out in spring or summer gives you time to explore your options, get estimates, and plan financially – without feeling rushed or scrambling to get it done before the first cold snap.
  • You’ll be ready when the first chill hits. Most people remember their fireplace maintenance once temperatures start to drop, but wouldn’t it be nice if you could light things up on that first cold day of the season? With an early inspection done and out of the way, you’ll have a fireplace that’s ready to perform when you need it the most.

What if I use my fireplace year round? When should I schedule an inspection?

If you’re a year round fireplace user, is spring and summer still the best time for a chimney service? You bet – it’s still a lot less busy, ensuring flexible scheduling and quicker repair work, should it be needed.

That said, if you do use your fireplace frequently all year – even during warmer months – you might consider scheduling more frequent cleanings and inspections. Talk to your sweep about booking two or three times per year – once before the colder months hit and once after your season of heaviest use.

When Is a Level 2 Chimney Inspection Required?

There are three levels of chimney inspections, with level 1 inspections being the most basic and level 3 inspections typically requiring actual demolition work. And in the middle is the in-depth level 2 inspection, which involves camera equipment and offers an up-close look at your flue’s interior.

So, when is a level 2 chimney inspection required?

  • During real estate transactions. Whenever a home or business with a chimney or fireplace changes ownership, a level 2 inspection is recommended (or sometimes required).
  • After a chimney fire. Chimney fires can cause significant internal damage to the flue lining and masonry. A level 2 inspection identifies damage and verifies if the chimney is safe to use again.
  • After significant changes or repairs. If you’ve made major repairs, renovations, or modifications to your heating system (added a new liner, switched to an insert, etc.), a level 2 inspection should be performed once everything is set up to ensure safer operation.
  • When unusual problems arise. Persistent smoke issues, unusual odors, cracks in the chimney or firebox, or deterioration detected during a level 1 inspection may prompt a level 2 inspection. It helps locate hidden problems, so they can be promptly addressed.
