How Do Creosote Levels Vary Between Wood Types?
Creosote buildup is a natural byproduct of burning wood – and no matter what you burn, creosote will form, so avoiding it altogether is, unfortunately, not an option. That said, you can control how much creosote forms by controlling what (and how) you burn.
What is creosote – and why should it be avoided?
Creosote is a tar-like, glossy, sticky, or flaky substance that forms when smoke from burning wood cools and condenses on the inner walls of the flue. It’s highly flammable, and if enough accumulates, it can ignite and cause a chimney fire. The U.S. Fire Administration states that creosote buildup is one of the leading causes of chimney fires each year.
How can I avoid creosote buildup?
- Burn hardwoods, not softwoods. Hardwoods (like oak, maple, hickory, and birch) are denser, burn hotter, and produce less smoke than softwoods – all factors that can help minimize creosote buildup.
- Don’t burn unseasoned wood. Green wood (wood that’s wet or unseasoned) will force your fires to burn through lots of water before producing an effective burn. This makes for weaker fires, more acidic byproducts in your flue, lots more smoke, and – you guessed – more creosote.
- Keep your fires hotter. Low, smoldering fires don’t generate enough heat to burn off the gases and byproducts created during combustion – byproducts that wind up in your flue as creosote. Aim for a hot, clean-burning fire to reduce buildup.
- Make sure your flue is properly sized. A flue that’s too large or too small for your stove or fireplace can cause poor draft, leading to cooler flue temperatures and more creosote.
- Avoid burning paper, cardboard, or trash. These materials can produce fast-burning, smoky fires that contribute to creosote buildup and pose a chimney fire risk. The only thing you should be burning is seasoned firewood.
- Warm up the flue before starting your main fire. A cold flue can cause combustion gases to condense quickly, forming creosote. Burning a small amount of newspaper or kindling first can help warm up the flue and improve draft.
- Have your chimney cleaned regularly. Even with the best burning practices, some creosote is inevitable. Schedule annual chimney inspections and sweepings to keep buildup in check.
Is it okay to burn softwood if that’s all I have?
Yes – in moderation. Softwood is fine for kindling or shorter fires. Just make sure it’s well-seasoned, and if you burn a lot of softwood, have your chimney inspected more frequently.
How can I tell if my wood is properly seasoned?
Check for cracks at the ends, pieces that are lighter weight, and logs that make a hollow “clunk” sound when smacked together. Or, for most accurate results, use a moisture meter – seasoned firewood should read under 20%.
How Long Does a Chimney Sweeping ServiceTypically Take?
A standard chimney sweeping can take anywhere between 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the state of your system and what type of fireplace you have. Remember that a professional sweep does more than just clean the flue. A full-service chimney sweep service typically includes:
- A Level 1 visual inspection of the firebox, damper, and flue using a flashlight or camera.
- The use of rotary brushes and vacuums to remove soot and creosote buildup from the flue walls.
- Putting down drop cloths and operating HEPA vacuums keep the surrounding area clean.
- Briefing the client on the condition of their system, as well as any concerns found and recommendations for future maintenance.
Do I need to be home during the sweep?
Yes, you should be. Someone should be around to let our techs in, as well as ask questions and hear the results of the inspection. If there are any needed repairs or concerns, we’ll need to work with you to figure out the best plan forward – and what services would work best with your budget, needs, and preferences.
Should I clean the fireplace myself before the sweep?
No need – our techs will take care of it all! When it comes to chimney sweeping, using the proper tools and techniques is imperative for ensuring everything is done correctly, that nothing is missed, and that no chimney components get damaged in the process.
That said, removing ashes and fireplace tools ahead of time makes the job easier for us, as does ensuring the space around the fireplace has been adequately cleared.
