What’s the Difference Between a Fireplace and a Fireplace Insert?
If you’re in the market for a new fireplace, you have heard the terms fireplace and fireplace insert. But what’s the difference between these two things? And how do you know which you need?
- Fireplaces are built-in systems that are part of the original construction of a home or newly built during a renovation. They can be masonry (brick or stone) or factory-built, and they usually have some type of open hearth, along with a traditional chimney. These are best for new construction jobs or major remodels/rehauls, where a full fireplace can be added.
- Fireplace inserts are essentially sealed fireboxes that are installed (or inserted) into an existing fireplace. The purpose of an insert is to upgrade a current fireplace, whether you’re looking to boost efficiency and switch fuel types. Inserts use the existing chimney and can slide directly into the current fireplace opening with minimal construction work.
To put it more simply, the fireplace is an original structure (like the frame of a car), while a fireplace insert is a way to upgrade a fireplace (or like adding a new engine to a car). Just like you can’t use an engine with a car, you can’t operate a fireplace insert without already having a fireplace in place.
What Type of Fireplace Is Best for My Space – Wood, Gas, Pellet, or Electric?
Whether you’re going with a fireplace, insert, stove, or outdoor heating system, knowing which fuel to use is an important decision – and it’s not one to make lightly.
Some automatically go with wood because they want an authentic ambiance, only to find out they don’t have the space for wood storage or the time to invest in a higher-maintenance fuel type. On the flip side, some go with gas or electric because it’s so convenient, only to discover that they miss the smells and sounds of real wood logs burning.
That’s why thoroughly going over the pros – and cons – of each fuel type before making your final choice is imperative.
Wood-Fueled Fireplaces: Pros & Cons
Pros:
- Classic ambiance
- Real flames
- Crackling wood sounds
- No need for electricity or gas
- Works in a power outage
Cons:
- Requires more maintenance
- Requires cleanup (scooping ash, etc.)
- Must season or store your own wood
- Produces smoke and emissions
Gas-Fueled Fireplaces: Pros & Cons
Pros:
- Easy to use with instant on/off switches
- Cleaner burning than wood
- Low maintenance
- Can be vented or ventless
- Highly efficiency with strong heat output
Cons:
- Requires a gas line hookup
- Less authentic compared to wood
- Venting options may affect placement.
Pellet-Fueled Fireplaces: Pros & Cons
Pros:
- Burns eco-friendly wood pellets
- Low-maintenance
- More authentic/traditional than gas
- Cleaner-burning than wood
- Easy to control heat output
Cons:
- Requires electricity to operate
- Need a place for pellet storage
- Messier than gas options
Electric-Fueled Fireplaces: Pros & Cons
Pros:
- Simple/easy installation
- No venting required
- Low maintenance
- Can be portable
- Can use flame effects without heat
Cons:
- Doesn’t produce real flames
- Dependent on electricity
- Least authentic of the fuel type
So, which is best for you? If you value the traditional charm of an old-fashioned fireplace, wood is going to be your best bet. If you’re striving for convenience and efficiency above all else, we’d recommend gas. Looking for a good middle ground? Pellets offer a genuine wood burn, just with less work. And finally, if you’re renting, dealing with a small space, or just want the easiest and more affordable option possible, consider an electric unit.
Can I Install a Fireplace if I Don’t Have a Chimney?
Definitely. If you don’t already have a chimney in place, we have options to set you up with a venting system that’s most suitable for your home and space – as well as some systems that don’t require venting at all.
The simplest option for homeowners wanting a fireplace without a chimney is to either invest in a ventless gas fireplace or an electric fireplace. These require no venting system at all, so no new flues would need to be added. That said, electric options may not invite that classic fireplace feel that many crave, and some areas have restrictions against ventless gas options due to indoor air quality concerns.
If you’re wanting something more than a plug-in model, but aren’t looking to invest in a full fireplace and chimney build, we have great middle-of-the-road options, as well. Many of our gas, wood, and pellet stoves and fireplaces can be vented through metal flue pipes. We’d need to create a space in your wall or ceiling for the pipe to travel through, but would not need to construct a full masonry chimney.
Of course, if you would like to have a masonry or stone chimney built, we would be happy to speak with and discuss your options and vision. Whatever you need, the experts at Stove Depot are here to deliver quality results.
